There are several important factors to consider when selecting a handrail profile. First is the balance between function and design. Our handrails come in a wide variety of profiles each of which has been designed to comfortably fit your hand. However, some handrail profiles are more suited for those with smaller hands or with special needs. For example children and elderly may desire a smaller profile to add that extra security when ascending or descending a staircase. If your system requires handrail fittings then you will also want to consider the availability of the specific fittings you will require. WoodStairs offers a huge selection of handrail fittings for most of our handrail profiles. Additonally it is important to consider the size of the bottom of the handrail when they will be used with square top traditional or mission wood balusters. Some handrails will not accomodate a plow for the larger 1 3/4" square top balusters. In case you are wondering, a plow is simple a channel removed from the bottom of the handrail into which the balusters are seated and spaced with appropriately sized pieces of trim called Fillet. Fillet holds the balusters in place while filling in the spaces between with a decorative finish. Finally, don't forget to include hardware and accessories that you may need such as drill bits, rail bolts, wood plugs or wall mounting brackets. |
