Poplar - Liriodendron tulipifera

Poplar is a versatile soft and lightweight hardwood. As one of the most inexpensive domistic hardwoods it is often used in paint grade applications or in place of more expensive hardwoods with similar grain patters such as Cherry or Walnut when hardness is not an issue. It paints, stains, and enamels exceptionally well, especially in darker tones giving it the ability to approximate other woods' colors if not their exact grain patterns. Poplar machines, nails, screws, glues and bores easily and dries easily with minimal shrinkage or movement. As mentioned it is very economical and has a Janka Hardness rating of 540.
