A Skirtboard, also known as a stair stringer, is the component that runs on the wall under the balustrade or up the enclosed side of the stair (this is also known as a Kickboard). Skirtboards on open treads can be mitered to each riser to create the finished look or it can simply be notched behind the riser and the end of the riser covered with a riser mouldinng. Kickboards are notched up the enclosed wall side of a stair with solid treads or false tread caps butting to it. It provides wall protection against kicking and vacuums. While skirtboards are not structural and therefore not required they do add additional depth to your stair and balustrade. Our Skirtboards are 3/4" thick solid wood (not veneered). They are manufactured from two or more pieces that are edge glued to resist warping and they are sanded and stain ready on one face.
